1. About Remote Terminal
What is Remote Terminal?
Remote Terminal lets you enter an amount or build a basket on your phone, then send the payment to one of your Lopay Business Terminals. Your customer taps their card on the terminal to pay, and the result appears on your phone.
This can be useful when taking orders at a table, choosing between several terminals along a bar, or sending a payment from an office to a driver’s terminal.
Does my phone take the card payment?
No. Your phone builds the sale, selects the terminal and lets you change the amount or cancel. The customer’s card is read by the terminal, which processes and completes the payment.
Which terminals can I use?
Terminal | Supported connections |
Lopay Business Terminal S700 or S710 | Server and Bluetooth |
Verifone V660p | Server only |
How does my phone connect to the terminal?
Server: Your phone sends the payment to Lopay, which passes it to your terminal. Both devices need an internet connection, but they do not need to be near each other.
Bluetooth: Your phone sends the payment directly to a nearby terminal. The devices must be within a few metres, such as in the same room or vehicle. Your terminal still needs internet to complete the payment.
2. Setting up Remote Terminal
How do I set up Remote Terminal?
Before you start, make sure your terminal is already connected to your Lopay app.
1. On your terminal, tap More, turn on Remote Terminal, then select Continue.
2. On your phone, open My Devices in the Lopay app.
3. Select the terminal you want to use, then choose Use for remote payments.
Which connection will my account use?
Your account or terminal | Default connection |
Taxi merchant using an S700 or S710 | Bluetooth |
All other merchants | Server |
Any merchant using a Verifone V660p | Server only, including taxi merchants |
Do both devices need internet?
With Server, both your phone and terminal need internet.
With Bluetooth, your phone does not need internet to send the payment. It can be in airplane mode with Bluetooth switched on. Your terminal must still have internet to complete the payment, so this is not an offline payment option.
Will I need to allow Bluetooth access?
If your account uses Bluetooth, you will need to allow Bluetooth access on your phone. The Server connection does not ask for Bluetooth permission.
Can I change my connection method?
Please contact Lopay Support if you would like to change between Server and Bluetooth. There is no setting in the Lopay app for you to change this yourself.
Bluetooth is suitable when your phone and terminal are within a few metres of each other. If they are in different rooms or locations, use Server. Verifone V660p terminals cannot use Bluetooth because the hardware does not support this connection.
Support has changed my connection but it still looks the same
The change takes effect when the app next refreshes your account settings. If it has not updated, sign out of the Lopay app and sign back in.
3. Taking a remote payment
How do I send a payment to my terminal?
1. Open the Charge screen in the Lopay app.
2. Enter the amount, or build your cart if you have added items.
3. Select Send to terminal, or choose the terminal from the payment options.
4. The payment will appear on the selected terminal. Ask your customer to tap their card on the terminal to complete it.
5. The terminal completes the payment and your phone shows the result.
Can I choose between several terminals?
Yes. With Server, you can select from the full list of your terminals, as long as both devices are online. With Bluetooth, you can select any of your terminals within range.
What will my customer see on the terminal?
The terminal shows the usual payment screen, progress, result and receipt options. The payment screen cannot be swiped away or dismissed while the terminal is collecting the card payment.
After the payment finishes, the screen clears after around five seconds so the terminal is ready for the next payment.
What if the payment fails?
Send the payment again from your phone. There is no retry button on the terminal for a remote payment.
Will my phone show payments started directly on the terminal?
No. Your phone only receives the result of the payment it sent. A separate payment started directly on the same terminal is not reported back to your phone through Remote Terminal.
