Adding a tax to a payment

1) Go to the "Charge" screen in your Lopay app (2nd icon at the bottom)

2) Select 'Show options' in the top left and select Add taxes

3) A rate of 20% for VAT will show as standard - tap the toggle to highlight it blue if you wish to enable this tax.

Alternatively, select 'Create new' at the bottom of the app and enter the following details:

  • Description

  • Percentage

  • Type of tax - choose from: Inclusive (i.e. The final price includes the tax upfront; the listed price is the total cost) OR Exclusive (i.e. The price shown is the base price, with tax calculated and added at the end)

4) Use the toggle at the top to choose whether these settings apply to all payments by default or only to this payment.

5) Select 'Done' to save your selections

The taxes will then show on the charge screen and you can charge as you would normally - i.e. enter the amount and select 'Charge'.

Passing on card fees

Please note: UK businesses are not permitted to add surcharges to most consumer card payments due to regulations introduced in 2018 that prohibit additional fees. Surcharges are allowed for commercial cards and certain other cases, provided the fee does not exceed your actual processing cost and customers are informed clearly and upfront.

If appropriate, you can add a fee to transactions via the steps below:

1) Go to the 'Charge' screen in your Lopay app (2nd icon at the bottom)

2) Select 'Show options' in the top left and select Add taxes

3) Select 'Create new' at the bottom of the screen.

4) Enter a Description, e.g. 'Card fee', and a percentage fee (e.g. '1%'), and select 'Exclusive' fee type from the drop down list.

5) Toggle on the 'Card fees' tax and the toggle at the top of the screen so that this tax applies to all transactions by default.

6) Select 'Save'.
